ACC NCAA Tournament Resumes

Here is a breakdown of the possible NCAA Tournament teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). I will try to update this as much as I can, but I cannot promise a daily update.

All computer numbers are courtesy of ESPN.com's InsideRPI. The cities/states in parenthesis are where the neutral game was played. Bad losses are losses that I feel that the team should have won. I will list the team's best wins under good wins.

The ACC is the top rated conference according to ESPN.com. North Carolina, Duke and Clemson are locks at this point, but with a few losses, Clemson could be in trouble. The middle of the ACC is a mess with Maryland and Wake Forest struggling. Miami has come on as of late, as well as Virginia Tech. The ACC could get anywhere between 3 and 7 bids.

Locks: North Carolina, Duke, Clemson
Should be in: Miami
Bubble teams in: Maryland, Virginia Tech
Bubble teams out: Florida State, Wake Forest

North Carolina (27-2, 12-2)
RPI: 3
SOS: 7
Non-Conference SOS: 26
Record against RPI top 25: 4-1
Record against RPI 26-50: 2-0
Last 10 games: 9-1
Road/neutral: 14-0
Good non-conference wins: at Davidson, at Kentucky, at Ohio State, Nevada, Kent State
Good non-conference losses: none
Good conference wins: at Clemson, Miami, Clemson
Good conference losses: Duke
Bad losses: Maryland
Remaining schedule: Florida State, at Duke, ACC Tournament

The Tar Heels have a big game left at Duke. They have to avoid a trap game against surging Florida State. If they win their final 2 games and have a strong showing in the ACC Tournament, they have a good chance at a #1 seed. UNC played a rough non-conference schedule, and they came out unscathed with some resume building wins.

Duke (25-3, 12-2)
RPI: 4
SOS: 21
Non-Conference SOS: 83
Record against RPI top 25: 5-2
Record against RPI top 50: 1-0
Last 10 games: 8-2
Road/neutral: 10-3
Good non-conference wins: Marquette (Hawaii), Wisconsin, at Davidson
Good non-conference losses: Pittsburgh (New York)
Good conference wins: Clemson, Miami, at North Carolina
Good conference losses: at Miami
Bad losses: at Wake Forest
Remaining Schedule: at Virginia, North Carolina, ACC Tournament

Duke barely escaped the Wolfpack to get Mike Krzyzewski his 800th career win. Duke faces a bad Virginia team on the road before another showdown with arch-rival North Carolina. The Blue Devils won the first meeting in Chapel Hill. The loss to Pittsburgh was a big missed opportunity.

Clemson (19-7, 8-5)
RPI: 23
SOS: 34
Non-Conference SOS: 194
Record against RPI top 25:
Record against RPI top 50:
Last 10 games: 6-4
Road/neutral: 6-5
Good non-conference wins: at Mississippi State, Purdue, at Alabama
Good non-conference losses: Mississippi (Puerto Rico)
Good conference wins: Miami
Good conference losses: North Carolina, at Duke, at Miami, at North Carolina
Bad losses: Charlotte, at Florida State
Remaining Schedule: at Maryland, at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, ACC Tournament

Clemson is currently in lock status, but that could change with a loss to Maryland today. They then play Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech before the ACC Tournament. Their non-conference wins at Mississippi State and Purdue keep getting better.

Miami (19-8, 7-7)
RPI: 25
SOS: 22
Non-Conference SOS: 135
Record against RPI top 25: 2-3
Record against RPI top 50: 2-0
Last 10 games: 6-4
Road/neutral: 7-6
Good non-conference wins: Providence (Puerto Rico), Virginia Commonwealth (Puerto Rico), at Mississippi State
Good non-conference losses: none
Good conference wins: Clemson, at Virginia Tech, Duke
Good conference losses: North Carolina, at Duke, at Clemson
Bad losses: Winthrop
Remaining Schedule: Boston College, at Florida State, ACC Tournament

The Hurricanes are in good position for an at-large bid. They have to win one of their final two to stay on .500 in ACC play. Neither of these games are a gimme, but Miami should win both games. Beating Providence and VCU in a preseason tournament can help if needed. Like Clemson, Miami won at Mississippi State.

Maryland (18-11, 8-6)
RPI: 59
SOS: 19
Non-Conference SOS: 76
Record against RPI top 25: 1-4
Record against RPI top 50: 0-1
Last 10 games: 6-4
Road/neutral: 5-6
Good non-conference wins: at Charlotte, Illinois
Good non-conference losses:UCLA (Kansas City), Missouri (Kansas City), Virginia Commonwealth (Washington D.C.)
Good conference wins: at North Carolina
Good conference losses: Duke, at Duke, at Miami
Bad losses: American, Ohio, Boston College
Remaining Schedule: Clemson, at Virginia, ACC Tournament

Maryland is slipping due to their 2-3 record in their last 5. Maryland has an average RPI for an at-large contender, and they did not have a signature non-conference win. The Terps should win 2 more games to feel safe.

Virginia Tech (17-11, 8-6)
RPI: 56
SOS: 48
Non-Conference SOS: 128
Record against RPI top 25: 0-4
Record against RPI top 50: 0-1
Last 10 games: 6-4
Road/neutral: 6-9
Good non-conference wins: none
Good non-conference losses: Butler (Anchorage), Gonzaga (Anchorage)
Good conference wins: Maryland, at Maryland
Good conference losses: Duke, Miami, at North Carolina
Bad losses: at Penn State, at Richmond
Remaining Schedule: Wake Forest, at Clemson, ACC Tournament

Like Maryland, Virginia Tech does not have a good  non-conference win (the best win was against UNC-Asheville). They also do not have a win against the RPI top 50. Virginia Tech has a winnable game at home against Wake Forest before going to Clemson. They need a strong showing in the ACC Tournament to make a legitimate case.

Florida State (17-12, 6-8)
RPI: 70
SOS: 28
Non-Conference SOS: 94
Record against RPI top 25: 2-4
Record against RPI top 50: 1-0
Last 10 games: 5-5
Road/neutral: 5-8
Good non-conference wins: UAB (Daytona Beach), at Florida
Good non-conference losses: at Butler, at Providence
Good conference wins: at Miami, Clemson
Good conference losses: at Clemson, Duke, North Carolina
Bad losses: Cleveland State (Daytona Beach), South Florida (Daytona Beach), North Carolina State
Remaining Schedule: at North Carolina, Miami, ACC Tournament

Florida State has won 3 straight, and now have a trip to Chapel Hill on Tuesday. This means they must win against Miami or their chances are all but over. 7-9 might be good enough in the ACC with a strong performance in the conference tournament. Losses to Cleveland State and SOuth Florida in a pre-season tournament really hurt.

Wake Forest (16-11, 6-8)
RPI: 83
SOS: 104
Non-Conference SOS: 286
Record against RPI top 25: 3-3
Record against RPI top 50: 0-0
Last 10 games: 4-6
Road/neutral: 2-9
Good non-conference wins: BYU
Good non-conference losses: at Charlotte, at Vanderbilt, at Georgia
Good conference wins: Miami, Duke
Good conference losses: at Clemson, at North Carolina
Bad losses: at Boston College, Georgia Tech, at Georgia Tech
Remaining Schedule: at Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, ACC Tournament

Wake Forest is really struggling now. They have lost 3 straight after the huge win against Duke. BYU is the only thing worth noting in the non-conference. They must win both of their remaining games to get to .500 in league play. If they win 2 games in the ACC Tournament, they have a shot.
